Why Late Summer Is Hard on Your Brakes
Brakes work by turning motion into heat. That is fine on an open highway, but South Bay school routes are the opposite of open.
Between drop-offs at both ends of the day, your afternoon is dominated by stop-and-go driving where you spend more time slowing than cruising. Every stop generates friction heat at the pad and rotor surfaces. In late summer the pavement is radiating stored heat, and the air flowing under your car, which normally cools brake components, arrives already warm.
Two things happen as a result. The pad material can begin to fade, losing bite at the top of its temperature range. And the rotor surface can develop glazing, a hardened, polished condition where the friction material no longer grips as effectively. Neither shows up as a warning light.
Worth being clear about what this does and does not mean: heat-cycled brakes are not the same as failed brakes, and a properly maintained system handles a Los Angeles summer. What changes is the margin, and margin is exactly what you want back before you start doing your most demanding braking of the year with kids in the car.
What the Measurements Actually Mean
A technician measures pad thickness rather than eyeballing it, so it helps to know what the numbers mean and to ask for them.
- 10 to 12 millimeters is roughly where new pads start
- 6 to 9 millimeters is healthy, with no service needed soon
- 3 to 4 millimeters is the recommended replacement range, and where the built-in wear indicator typically begins to squeal
- 2 millimeters or less means replace now, because rotor damage becomes likely and a pad job turns into a pad-and-rotor job
Ask for the figure in millimeters, and ask for rotor measurements against the manufacturer minimum specification. Those two numbers tell you whether you have a full school year of driving ahead or about a month, which is considerably more useful than being told they look fine.
One more thing worth knowing: brake wear happens gradually enough that most drivers adapt to it without noticing. You compensate for a slightly longer pedal without registering the change. That is precisely why an inspection beats waiting for a symptom loud enough to alarm you.
Brake fluid also deserves attention. It absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point, and dark fluid is a common visual indicator of heat and age. This is a time-based service rather than a mileage-based one, so check your owner's manual for the interval on your specific Chevrolet.
Tires in Late Summer Heat
Tire rubber degrades in sustained heat, and Southern California delivers plenty of it. Hot pavement raises internal tire pressure during the day, and an underinflated tire heats faster and ages quicker than a properly inflated one.
The important part is that sidewall cracking and rubber hardening can progress without obvious visible damage. A tire that looked fine in June can be meaningfully compromised by September while still appearing serviceable.
Repeated braking also wears front tires faster than rear, and if your Chevrolet has not had a rotation recently, that wear concentrates rather than distributing.
Two Tire Checks You Can Do in Your Driveway
Both take under a minute, and one of them corrects a common misconception.
Measure tread with a quarter, not a penny. Insert a quarter into the tread groove with Washington's head pointing down. If the tread covers part of his head, you have at least 4/32 of an inch. If you can see the top of his head, it is time to shop.
Here is the misconception worth clearing up: 4/32 of an inch is a recommended replacement threshold, not a legal minimum. Most states set the legal floor at 2/32, which the familiar penny test measures. The gap between those two figures is where wet stopping distance climbs sharply, which matters when the first real rain arrives on an oil-slicked road after a dry summer.
Check tire age with the DOT code. Find the DOT code on the sidewall and read the last four digits, which give the week and year of manufacture. So "2321" means the 23rd week of 2021. General guidance is to avoid running tires more than six years old regardless of how the tread looks.
That second check is the one almost nobody performs, and in Southern California it is the more important of the two. Sun and heat harden rubber from the outside while tread depth stays respectable, so a low-mileage car can have plenty of tread and rubber that no longer grips the way it should.
What a Multi-Point Inspection Covers
